This article examines the historical development of Islamic education in the archipelago, from its initial form as religious studies in mosques to its transformation in the contemporary era. Using a historical-descriptive approach, this study analyzes the evolution of Islamic educational institutions such as pesantren and madrasah, and their role in shaping the characteristics of Islamic education in Indonesia. The results of the study indicate that Islamic education in the archipelago has undergone significant developments marked by three main phases: (1) the initial phase in the form of religious studies in mosques which became the foundation of informal Islamic education, (2) the institutionalization phase through the establishment of pesantren as centers of traditional education, and (3) the modernization phase with the emergence of madrasahs that integrate religious and general education. In the contemporary era, Islamic education faces the challenges of modernization and globalization that require adaptation of the learning system to remain relevant. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of Islamic education in the archipelago and its implications for the development of Islamic education in the future.
